Trades Entrance Exam Upstart Initiative (TEEUP)

The students will be instructed in preparation for the Nunavut Entrance Exam (NUEE).  This 5-day course will prepare them for the exam, with a focus on the historically challenged areas of the exams from previous attempts by those taking this course and from the information
we've gathered from others that have taken and failed the exams.

This training program will also lay the groundwork to foster positive achievable goals beyond the NUEE, such as entering the trades and career choices they are interested in. This course will delve into information on the Red Seal trades available in Nunavut. We will showcase interviews of tradespeople of Inuit origin, allowing them to tell their stories of overcoming training obstacles and how they felt upon achieving their career goals.

Topics

The student learners will develop knowledge and confidence in the following areas:

  • Safety programs and expectations of safety on the job site. (Commercial and residential)
  • Communication stylings of those that have been in the workplace for decades compared to newcomers.
  • General overview and discussions of heavy equipment to light duty tools on sites they may encounter.
  • How to network, promote and source out available workplace opportunities.

Types of Training

The 5-day theoretical training program will prep learners with problem solving skills specific to the NUEE.

This will include the following:

  • Group work as a whole and in smaller groups on exams #1 & #2, promoting open dialogue and forensic breakdown on how to manage and answer the questions. The intent is to get the class to work as a team to negotiate the exam.
  • Videos of how to solve specific math questions. This will help to provide an outside source in which they can review on their own.
  • Provide handouts and tricks to solving the challenges of the exam.

Examination

There will be 3 mock exams given. The first will be worked on as a class. The second will be in groups of 2 or 3. The third will be on their own. The third exam will showcase the areas with the most challenges as an individual. A learning strategy will be drafted up at that point individually, with worksheets and proper guidance in which to build confidence to overcome the learning hurdle.

Resume Building

They will be given the opportunity to develop a proper resume with a generic cover letter.

There will be time allowed to develop and roleplay interview interaction.
